This week was once again filled with meetings.  With each meeting, we become more and more aware of the potential this movie has to impact so many people. We are continually blessed to work on this project with Chris and Denise Bueno and Ocean Avenue Entertainment!

We had our first table read of the script and it was great!  We met with potential Casting Directors, Line Producers, Composers, etc.   Read more about this week on our Producer’s Blog and Director’s Blog

We are humbled by the response of so many people interested in following our story…THANK YOU!  We are rebuilding our webpage and it will launch in the upcoming weeks. In the afternoon, we met with Steve McEveety and John Shepherd at Mpower Pictures…check them out here. They are two of the nicest, down to earth guys we have encountered in the industry. The meeting was incredible…we pitched the story and they want to read the script!!!

Script for “Not Today” Completed

The script for “Not Today” has been completed!  After an initial rough draft of a massive 181 pages, a complete re-write has now landed the screenplay at 130 pages. Feedback from Ocean Avenue Entertainment has been extremely positive.  The project will continue to be refined and revised, but the current edition will now remain as the basis for the plot and dialogue of the movie.

Scouting has also taken place in Orange County, CA, for the scenes of the movie that take place there.   This now completes the majority of the scouting.  With these two major pieces in place (script and scouting) the movie now stands as a viable project and all that follows will be based on the foundation of these two key elements.

Photo Studies Sent Between Abe (DP) and Jon (Director) as They Research the Look of the Film

Hey Jon.

The train is going to be killer.  Lots of fun , to set 3 different looks on the train alone as they travel through days.  Looking thru photos, give lots of ideas to architect some bonus shots.

In the meantime, here are a few of samples. Reminder, As you know most of the photos are location samples, off the truck if you will.  But it will be a super bonus to grade a greater latitude when we cut the final.   So we will shoot straight RAW information to gain the most color information. We will not be locked into a “Look”, but great reference to check natural contrast, and highlights.

Scouting Team Goes to India

Today, a team arrived in India to scout locations for shooting “Not Today,” later this year.  The team, consisting of Brent Martz, (Producer), Jon Van Dyke, (Director) and Abe Martinez (Director of Photography) will be in India just over a week, establishing connections with individuals who will be instrumental in making the movie.  They will be traveling across India, mapping out the route of the story and getting a sense of how it will play on-screen…

Stay tuned  as the team members blog about their  experiences on this trip…

A New Song Written for “Not Today” by Stephen Martin – Composer

As my wife, Shannon, and I sat and enjoyed our Valentine’s dinner at a nearby restaurant on Friday, we were discussing the script….  We talked about the themes in the movie, and were both quite taken with the line that Kamlesh (the 5-year old girl) keeps saying throughout the movie…. “Not today, Daddy… not today.”

I suggested to Shannon that she write some lyrics to a song based on that theme.  Her response was doubtful…something along the lines of…”Yeah, right.  I’ll just see if I can find time for that between taking care of the kids and keeping up with the house.”  I completely understood her sentiment and we moved on to other topics of conversation…

Little did I know that a few hours later, the lyrics for the entire song would be written…  She simply wasn’t able to go to sleep…captivated by the thought of little Kamlesh saying, “Not today, Daddy…not today.”

Not knowing that she had written the lyrics, I woke up Saturday morning – struck with a melody that wouldn’t go away.  As I rushed out of the room to  go get it down on paper, Shannon said, “Wait!  Where are you going?  I want to show you something!”   “I’ll be right back,” was my reply as I rushed downstairs to write down the melody.

When I came back and told her that I had to get the melody down before I lost it, she kindly handed me a piece of paper with an entire page of lyrics written out… two verses, a chorus and a bridge!   I was captivated by the lyrics she had written…they were obviously inspired and went perfectly with the script of the movie.  I again rushed off downstairs to begin piecing together the music for the song… A few hours later, (in the middle of keeping up with kids, phone calls, and life as usual) the song was born.

This is not necessarily normal for us… Shannon has written many songs..but only one other time have we written a song together…   Clearly, this was a moment that God chose to create…

I can’t wait to hear more great music that will be written by others for this film… It is my hope and prayer that all of it will somehow be used to move people to a place of new understanding for the people of India and anyone who is considered an outcast.

“Children of God. Crushed under foot. Untouchables. Outcasts. Dalits. These are few of the words that have been used to describe this people group. Have you heard of them? Few have. Not even a part of the caste system, the Dalits suffer human rights violations and other persecution on a daily basis – simply because of the caste system of India.”
